Tara Subramaniam - Executive Director
Tara co-founded Student Voice in the summer of 2012 with a vision of creating a place where all students could share their ideas. Before becoming Executive Director she previously served as Director of Programming where she managed the organization's cornerstone Twitter chats. She is currently studying at Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. Tara loves to write, read, run, travel and learn new languages. She strives to live by the opening words of the Holstee Manifesto: “This is your life. Do what you love and do it often. Andrew Brennen - National Field Director
Andrew is currently taking a gap year from UNC Chapel Hill where he studies Strategic Communication with the the School of Media and Journalism. Andrew joined the Student Voice team with the vision of curating a national student voice movement. Andrew joins Student Voice after co-founding the Prichard Committee Student Voice Team, a Kentucky based group with the goal of elevating and amplifying student voice in education policy. Andrew is obsessed with politics and the Youtube series “Autotune the news”. Andrew is inspired by Assata Shakur’s words “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”
Merrit Jones - Director of Partnerships
Merrit Jones is a recent graduate of River Bluff High School in Lexington, SC and is currently taking a gap year. She joined the Student Voice team after having founded Student Space when she noticed disparities among South Carolina schools and the lack of students in the conversation around how to improve them. Today, she is working with Student Voice to coordinate their nationwide network of students as well as oversee the creation of the State of Schools report. Merrit believes that one must always dare greatly and be the person “in the arena,” as the great Theodore Roosevelt said, to affect real change. When she's not fighting in the education arena, you can find her cooking, doing yoga, or listening to a podcast.
Zak Malamed - Founder & Senior Advisor
Zak is a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park where he created a major in Engagement and Media. He sees student voices as the common sense mechanism for addressing education equity and advancement. Beyond Student Voice, he lives his life to go to space, travel to all seven continents, enjoy great music, and share these experiences with family and friends. Eileen Chen - Director of the Student Bill of Rights
Eileen Chen is a long time resident of northern Virginia and currently attends the University of Virginia. In high school, she was a student representative for a Portfolio Learning program and a peer tutor who worked closely with the ESOL program. From these experiences, she became passionate about skills-based education and ensuring traditionally underrepresented students have a voice. Eileen coordinated research and content development for the Student Bill of Rights, and is continuing to promote the platform through the Students of America podcast and other upcoming projects. In her spare time, Eileen enjoys geeking out over art history and reading sappy novels.
Daniel Kao - Director of Technology and Digital Strategy
Daniel Kao is a computer science graduate from UCSD. Born and raised in the heart of the Silicon Valley, he is passionate about technology and startups. Daniel manages the technical infrastructure for Student Voice, built the website and Student Bill of Rights, and executes digital strategies. In his spare time, he cooks, eats, dances, golfs, drums, makes other loud noises and explosions, and does awesome.
Ian Coon - Director of Public Relations
Ian is a first year student at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa majoring in Journalism and Communications. His professional and personal interactions all have a focus of empowering the passion-driven work of others through collaboration and leadership, while recognizing the critical aspect of student voice. Ian is one of two student co-founders of the Iowa Student Learning Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to revolutionizing student voice in Iowa. Building community and providing space for students to share their voice is what has put Ian in many leadership roles in Iowa and across the nation. In his free time he enjoys photography, videography, and traveling.
Maxwell Richter - Director of Programming
Max Richter is currently a sophomore at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona where he is majoring in Air Transportation Management. In June 2015, Max graduated from High Tech High Media Arts in San Diego, California where he held the role as president of the Student Ambassador program for three and a half years. Max has a passion for travel which has taken him to more than 15 different countries in the last four years. Within Student Voice, Max holds the role of Director of Programming. Within this role, Max coordinates Monday night programming and works to ensure that Student Voice has a presence at many conferences. Max is also the host of the Students of America Podcast, a podcast produced by members of the Student Voice team that highlights the stories that have been collected on the National Tour.
David Campbell - Business Manager
David Campbell is responsible for managing the business and legal aspects of Student Voice, as well as running site analytics. A senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, David has been involved with Student Voice since January 2013. David has well-versed experience with student led startups, having successfully co-founded his own mobile IT venture, Bharath Campbell Industries LLC, his senior year of high school. He is passionate about connecting students with technology and enabling everyone to start their own businesses and navigate the sometimes complex legal environment they operate in. Hailing from the New York area, he is looking to broaden his educational horizon this semester by studying in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic. In his spare time he enjoys cycling, photography and scouring the web for new music.
