The Student Voice Organizing Session of the ISSV will provide attendees with a guide to student-led organizing and encourage participants to identify an issue that they feel passionate about. In addition to a combined student/adult training session, student-only breakout rooms based on interest areas will offer built in time to explore examples of student organizing and have insightful discussion with other interested peers from across the world. Adult-only breakout rooms following parallel topics will help to frame our adult attendees’ unique role in students organizing and the rest of the summit. Participants will be provided with a post-session toolkit with templates and examples of students organizing tactics using resources from our numerous partner organizations.
Facilitated by Mira, Ana, Harry Franks, and Lindsey Halman, UP for Learning
How do we build understanding and support for youth and adults working together as full partners in learning and change? This workshop will first provide participants with tools and strategies to introduce and explore the WHY of Youth-Adult partnership. We know that unless there is an understanding of the fundamental rationale for this way of operating, any subsequent efforts will be in danger of being inauthentic and/or poorly orchestrated. We will then explore the possibilities for WHAT Youth-Adult partnership can look and sound like? These examples can support us as we envision a new destination in the way youth and adults interact. Hear from others about the key variables of this evolving relationship when it is done with fidelity. Finally, tools will be provided and explored to create a new consciousness within your group, organization, or greater community about the core qualities of partnership. Concrete steps that can be taken to increase YAP in your school or organization will be offered.
